Your car is a 2010 to 2023 Hyundai or Kia, a 2011 to 2019 Toyota, or a Tesla delivered in California before December 16, 2016. Hyundai and Kia's $62.1 million settlement covers certain Sonata, Kona, Veloster, Forte, Optima and Sedona models owned as of April 14, 2025. Toyota's covers Corolla, Avalon, Tacoma, Tundra and Sequoia. The theft immobilizer case covers 2011 to 2022 Hyundai and Kia vehicles stolen or targeted on or after April 29, 2025.
Recalled Hyundai and Kia airbag vehicles get up to $350 in residual cash, unrecalled ones up to $150. The theft case pays up to $4,500 for a total loss, $2,250 for partial loss and $375 for an attempted theft. Tesla refunds idle fees plus $50 or $350.
You may qualify if
- ✓You own, lease, or previously owned or leased one of the listed model years.
- ✓Your VIN passes the lookup tool on the official settlement site, for the two airbag cases.
- ✓Your vehicle got the free Hyundai or Kia software upgrade, or had an appointment for it, and was stolen or targeted on or after April 29, 2025.
- ✓You have the insurer letter, police report or receipts the theft case requires.
All four vehicle cases require a VIN, and the theft immobilizer, Toyota and out-of-pocket airbag claims also require receipts, insurer letters or police reports.

My Kia was stolen last year. What can I claim?
The theft immobilizer settlement covers 2011 to 2022 Hyundai and Kia vehicles that lacked a factory engine immobilizer, received the free software upgrade or had an upgrade appointment, and suffered a theft or attempted theft on or after April 29, 2025. A total loss pays up to $4,500 with the insurer's total loss letter, proof of deductible and expense records. A partial loss pays up to $2,250 with the insurer letter and receipts. An attempted theft pays up to $375 with a police report and receipts. The deadline is March 31, 2027.
I sold the car. Can I still file the airbag claim?
For Hyundai and Kia, yes, if you owned or leased the vehicle as of April 14, 2025. Former owners who sold before that date are outside the class. Toyota's class includes current and former U.S. owners and lessees of eligible vehicles without that cutoff. In both, residual cash depends on whether the vehicle was under an NHTSA recall, and reimbursement for towing, rental cars, childcare, repairs or lost wages needs receipts.
