This one is narrow. It covers 2011 to 2022 Hyundai and Kia vehicles with no factory engine immobilizer that had the free anti-theft software upgrade (or an appointment for it) and were still stolen, damaged or targeted on or after April 29, 2025.
If your car was stolen before that date, this is the wrong settlement. Those thefts fell under the separate $145 million class settlement approved in 2024.
Three claim types, three caps: total loss up to $4,500, partial loss up to $2,250, attempted theft up to $375. Every one of them needs paperwork. Claims are due March 31, 2027.
You may qualify if
- ✓You own or lease a 2011 to 2022 Hyundai or Kia that left the factory without an engine immobilizer.
- ✓The car got the free Hyundai or Kia software upgrade, or you had an appointment booked for it.
- ✓A theft or attempted theft happened on or after April 29, 2025, and before the zinc ignition sleeve was installed or before March 31, 2027, whichever came first.
What you need to file
Documents for every claim type. Total loss: your insurer's total-loss letter, proof you paid the deductible, and records of other theft-related costs. Partial loss: the insurer's letter confirming partial loss plus expense records. Attempted theft: a police report and receipts for anything the attempt cost you.

Deadline and what you get
March 31, 2027. Up to $4,500, $2,250 or $375 depending on claim type. The caps are ceilings, and your documented costs and the $4.5 million set aside for consumer restitution within the $9 million multistate settlement shape what you actually receive.
Every eligible vehicle can also get two free security upgrades: the software update and a zinc-reinforced ignition cylinder protector. The settlement came out of a multistate investigation into the missing immobilizers that the 2022 'Kia Boyz' videos exploited. The administrator decides eligibility. The Payout app lists this settlement and links to the same form.
Questions about the Hyundai & Kia Theft Immobilizer case
My car was stolen in 2023. Is this the right settlement?
No. Thefts before April 29, 2025 were covered by the earlier $145 million national class settlement approved in 2024. This one covers thefts on or after that date.
Do I need to have gotten the software upgrade?
Yes, or at least a scheduled appointment for it. The settlement covers vehicles that had the upgrade or were booked for it and still had a qualifying theft or attempt.
Can I file without a police report?
For an attempted theft claim, a police report is listed as required. Total and partial loss claims rely on your insurer's letter and expense records instead.
What are the free security upgrades?
The software update and a zinc-reinforced ignition cylinder protector hardware installation, both available to eligible vehicles at no cost.
