Start with your VIN. The official site at acusettlement.com/hyundaikia has a lookup that tells you whether your Sonata, Kona, Veloster, Forte, Optima or Sedona carries the ZF-TRW airbag control unit in question. If it does, and you owned or leased the car as of April 14, 2025, you may be in the class.
Cash depends on recall status. A vehicle under the NHTSA recall for the control unit may get up to $350. An unrecalled vehicle with the same unit may get up to $150. Documented out-of-pocket costs from the defect or recall can be claimed on top.
The deadline is April 8, 2027. The fund is $62.1 million.
You may qualify if
- ✓You own, lease, or used to own or lease an eligible Hyundai or Kia, and you had it as of April 14, 2025.
- ✓Hyundai: certain 2011 to 2023 Sonata and Sonata Hybrid, 2018 to 2023 Kona, 2022 to 2023 Kona N, and 2019 to 2021 Veloster.
- ✓Kia: certain 2010 to 2013 Forte and Forte Koup, 2011 to 2020 Optima and Optima Hybrid, and 2011 to 2012 and 2014 Sedona.
- ✓You live in the United States, and the VIN lookup on the official site confirms the car is in the class.
What you need to file
Your VIN, first. The claim form asks for it, and the lookup tool is where you confirm eligibility before you type anything else.
For the residual cash payment, that is the whole requirement. For reimbursement of towing, rental cars, childcare during repairs, repair bills or lost wages tied to the defect or recall, upload or mail receipts.
The online form is five steps. If you prefer paper, write to Hyundai-Kia Airbag Control Unit Settlement, c/o JND Legal Administration, P.O. Box 91478, Seattle, WA 98111. Filing is free either way.
Deadline and what you get
April 8, 2027. Up to $350 for a recalled vehicle, up to $150 for an unrecalled one, plus documented expenses. Those are ceilings. The residual payments come from what remains in the $62.1 million fund, so the count of valid claims moves the final number.
The settlement also carries a 10-year or 100,000-mile warranty on replacement control units installed under the recall. You do not have to file to get the warranty if your car was already recalled and repaired. The case is In re ZF-TRW Airbag Control Units in the Central District of California (2:19-ml-02905). Hyundai and Kia deny the defect. Eligibility is the administrator's call, not this site's.

How do I know if my car is included?
Run your VIN through the lookup tool at acusettlement.com/hyundaikia. Model year alone is not enough. The tool confirms whether the specific vehicle has the ZF-TRW unit.
I sold the car. Can I still file?
Former owners and lessees are included as long as you owned or leased the vehicle as of April 14, 2025.
Do I need receipts?
Not for the residual cash payment. Receipts are needed only if you also claim out-of-pocket costs such as towing, rental cars, repairs, childcare or lost wages.
Do I need to file to get the warranty?
No. The warranty on replacement parts applies automatically if your vehicle was recalled and repaired.
